Monitor distance calculator
Quick answer
A 27 in 1440p monitor has a pixel density of about 109 ppi, so the pixel grid stops being resolvable at roughly 31.6 in. A 32 in 4K panel is denser at about 138 ppi and works from about 25 in. Higher resolution lets you sit closer, not further away.
The geometry is trigonometry and exact. The 60 pixels per degree comfort threshold and the 30 to 55 degree field of view target are conventions.
Pixel density = diagonal pixel count / diagonal inches. Distance = 60 / (ppi x pi / 180). Field of view = 2 x arctan(screen width / 2 / distance).
